More sculpted head!... The colors are just Photoshop
I actually took this pic like 3 weeks ago, just forgot to post it. I've done alot more work on it since... Shaped certian parts better, added more details and the rest of his hair, etc... Then I completely destroyed it when I went to hollow it out! Well not really but... I messed it up big time.
For this kind of clay, it needs to be hollowed out so it can dry quicker (and not weigh 500 pounds) so it wont explode when fired in the kiln. "How do you hollow a head like this out?" you may ask... well, you take some clay cutting wire thingy, and cut it to pieces! I had to cut it into three pieces, cause that's what my teacher suggested I do...
It was going pretty well... but I guess I didn't let it firm up enough, cause when I finished hollowing out, I went to put it back together and.... nothing matched XD I had to stretch and pull and all sorts of stuff to get the walls to line up again, and on top of all that, the ears started falling off again. I ended up having to rip one off (The one standing straight up) to put it pack together, and then reattach it afterwards.. but again, it wouldn't match up. I'd align the parts of the ear up that attached to the head and get it so everything matched up properly but... then the rest of the ear was completely off, didn't look like what I had before. So, I'd move it to fit the way it should look, but then the bottom didn't match up anymore x.X... The ear itself didn't change at all, it was solid as a rock almost... bleeh. Oh, and the ear that's drooping somehow got changed as well... I still don't now how but apparently it got pulled inward some so now from the front-on view it covers the left eye.
When i finally finished all that... he looked horrible XD he was all dented and lumpy and... weird. I just left it there and left after that, I didn't care anymore XD... Last saturday I fixed it up some more and kept letting it dry, and on monday it was stuck in the kiln... wont know if it exploded still or what till next class perhaps XD
For stuff this large, you may consider doing a simple wireframe mesh underneath it to help hold the clay up. This way you wouldn't have to cut it up into pieces.
Though if you're going to kiln fire it, I don't know how the wire will hold up in there.
